What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is a condition where the body does not produce enough tears to effectively lubricate your eyeballs. This lack of lubrication can result in dryness, redness, and itching in and around your eye.

What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome?

Many things can cause you to have dry eyes. One common problem is dysfunctional or decreased tear production. This could be caused by things like age, hormone levels, and inflammation in the tear glands. Dry eyes could also be caused by environmental factors like dust or allergens. Certain medications also list dry eyes as a side effect if you’re taking them.

In more serious cases, dry eyes could be caused by connected problems. Nerve dysfunction around your eye socket could lead to poor tear production. If you’ve had laser eye surgery, your dry eyes could also be a result of that.

How Is Dry Eye Syndrome Treated?

If you have dry eyes, visit your Dallas Fort Worth area optometrist for an examination. They can look at your entire eyeball and take your history to determine what is causing the dry eye. Once they have a cause for it, they can find the most appropriate treatment option.

Dry eye is commonly treated with eye drops that provide artificial lubrication. You can also take certain medications or treat clogged tear ducts by unblocking them with hot compresses. These treatments will resolve most cases of dry eyes. If they don’t work, or if the dryness is particularly severe, your optometrist might recommend certain surgical and non-surgical procedures to fix the problem.
