Conditions Treated

At the Brecheen Learning & Vision Center, we provide a full range of optometric and vision care services for the entire family. There are many fine optometrists in and around Dallas, TX. What sets us apart from traditional eye care services is that we focus on behavioral optometry. A behavioral optometrist, sometimes called a developmental optometrist, focuses not only upon vision, but upon the other body functions that depend upon the sense of sight to work properly. Movement and coordination depend upon being able to see one's environment. Skills like reading and writing also depend upon clear sight.

Poor vision or physical eye injuries can manifest through inability to move gracefully, to exercise fine motor coordination, or to track objects moving in space. Diagnoses of learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder are even sometimes rooted in vision problems.

There are many different dysfunctions and conditions which are treated through behavioral optometry. Some of the specific conditions we treat through behavioral optometry include:

Ocular Motor Dysfunction

Oculomotor dysfunction covers two separate but related vision difficulties. When people track an object moving in the environment, they rely on smooth pursuit eye movements. When eyes seek to follow an object very precisely from point to point, they rely upon saccadic eye movements. Poor smooth pursuit eye movements can result in poor coordination or athletic performance. Poor saccadic eye movements can lead to difficulty reading, or in some cases, a diagnosis of dyslexia. In both cases, at Brecheen Learning & Vision Center, we can perform a number of tests to determine whether a patient needs treatment for oculomotor dysfunction.

Attention Deficit Disorder

Experts don't agree upon the causes or treatment for attention deficit disorder, which has many different forms and causes. What is clear, is that many times a patient with an ADD or ADHD diagnosis can find some help through a thorough eye examination and evaluation. We offer the possibility of drug-free treatment for the condition.

Who Can Benefit from Treatment from a Behavioral Optometrist?

An evaluation done by a behavioral optometrist is crucial for students struggling with school work. At Brecheen Learning & Vision Center, we see many children, and we have been able to assist many of our patients with their learning difficulties through developmental optometry.

Adults who suffer from coordination or vision problems can benefit from our specialized services as well. We also offer a full range of vision care in addition to our cutting-edge behavioral optometry.
